To Register or Not To Register? By Brianna Bowman

One of the many perks of getting married (aside from marrying the love of your life) is all of the gifts. There are endless items you can register for and countless stores you can register at. So how do you decide where to register and what to add to your registry? Let me help you narrow down your list with three tips I utilized for making my wedding gift list.

  1. Register at stores you actually shop at

While we all would love to have a home full of Restoration Hardware and West Elm, it is not realistic for every budget. We can assume you are going to love every item you get as a gift, sometimes returns are necessary and you don’t want to be left with a merchandise credit to a store you rarely shop at. I opted for places I shop at frequently, including Amazon and Target, because no matter what happens I know I can find something for our household there. One of the great perks about registering on Amazon is that you can register for gift cards to some of your favorite places, including AirBnB (couples getaway!), and a year of Amazon Prime.

2. Register for items you actually want and need

We easily get caught up in the excitement of scanning countless items in the store that catch our eye or we think might look good in our homes, this can cause you to end up with a lot of unneeded items and things you have no use for. My fiance and I have a home full of necessities so we opted for a select few higher priced items and a honeymoon fund. After the travel-less year 2020 brought, we are ecstatic to get away and celebrate our love, so we registered on Honeyfund where our family and friends can give us items and activities for our trip.

3. Don’t be afraid to use “in lieu of gifts”

Times have changed drastically since our parents got married and many couples live together before the wedding which means you might have all of the typical household things couples would register for in the past. In recent years it is becoming more and more common for people to request monetary contributions to their honeymoon, household fund and even a charity of their choice. Don’t be afraid to use “in lieu of gifts” on your wedding website and wedding stationary to let your wedding guests know what you would really like to receive. I recommend still registering for a few items for those wedding guests that love giving a physical item as gifts.

Let’s make this easy! Register for the things you need, at the places you love and don’t let the massive selection overwhelm you. Stick to these tips and you’ll be crossing “complete the wedding registry” off your to-do list in no time. Happy shopping!
